Be Ye Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind

How much time do we spend scrolling on Facebook or tiktok or maybe even binge watching shows?

Imagine for a minute how the brain is like a computer. It only knows what we feed it. And now we’re over here just feeding it junk food. And if we’re honest, it doesn’t make us want to read the Bible. And we wonder why everyone is anxious and riddled with anxiety now.

Now, what if we even used just part of that time to memorize God’s word and hide it in our heart? What would we be feeding our mind? That’s a drastically different diet, isn’t it? In Romans 12:2, God’s word says we are to transformed by the renewing of our mind that we may prove that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

How do we renew our minds? By feeding it the word of God. Matthew 4:4 says that we do not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. If you want to see change in you and your life, start feeding your mind the word of God. Start hiding it in your heart and meditating on it day and night. Hebrews 4:12 says the word of God is living and active. If you want a transformed life, it begins with God and his living and active word.

One Year of Memorizing Bible Verses Did More for Me Than 27 Years of Self-Help Books

Memorizing Bible verses changed my life. I didn’t start out knowing that would happen. That is why I’m shouting it from the rooftop and helping others to discover this for themselves. If I did not realize the power this would have in my life, others probably don’t know either.

This wasn’t the first time I had memorized scripture, but it has been the longest. I started noticing changes along the journey this time. It was about 11 months in that I started realizing the power that was being released in my life.

God’s Word Released a Power in My Life That…

Freed me from something I had struggled with for over 20 years.
Freed me from overthinking.
Freed me from the voices in my head.

This was after 11 months of memorizing Bible verses. I was shook.

This is why it’s important to commit to this journey to see the fruit. The longer you do it, the more you will see fruit.

I had read so many self-help books for so many years. Yet everything seemed to remain the same. There was no real and lasting change. You can start to think you are irreversibly broken and damaged. You can start to think you are unlovable, an outcast and watch this scenario play over and over again in your life.

But it’s not true. The voices in your head are lying to you. You are never too far for God to reach you. You are never too lost. You are never to broken or damaged for God, the creator of everything. And HE loves you no matter how many have rejected and broken you.

I didn’t learn or feel any of these truths with self-help books. Maybe they sometimes said a few good things. But even then, there is no power in those words. Those words are not alive and active like God’s word. It’s still all on you to do it in your own strength. The truth is you don’t have the strength on your own. That’s why you’re on the endless hamster wheel of looking and hoping in another self-help book. I struggled for years in my own strength, but when God’s power came into my life through His word, there was no struggle, nothing at all compared to what it had been when I was doing things in my own strength. The shackles started falling off because of God being at work within me. Things just started hitting different.

God tells us in scripture that His word is alive and active. It does not come back void. And it is eternal. You can see from this that there is power in His word. They are not just words on paper. This is why you need this in your life and not self-help books.

These are some of the things that happened to me…and could happen for you, too…

Increase your faith
Silence the voices in your head
Help you not to sin
Free you from bondage, struggles, addictions, strongholds, etc.

I challenge you to start today. The only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t start sooner.

One Simple and Fun Way Grandparents Can Pass on a Legacy of Faith to Their Grandchildren

I became a grandparent 5 years ago, and it is life-changing. I get it now. I didn’t really have an active grandparent in my life growing up, so I didn’t understand what it was all about…or that special bond. I get it all now.

The love and bond between a grandparent and a grandchild is so special. This puts us in a unique place to do something pretty life-changing with them. We can help ground them in the Word of God, a word that is alive and active and does not come back void. And the great thing about it is it’s for all ages, from 3 to 100.

Kids are growing up in a busy and noisy world. There is so much competing for our attention and theirs now. These are often things that have no value and take precious time from Him. We get it. It’s something we all struggle with, prioritizing our time away from the things that steal our valuable and limited time. This is why it’s more important than ever to be a person in their lives that help ground them in God’s word.

This idea started with me many years ago when I homeschooled my children. I created a Bible memory system that worked for us, and we loved it.

You might be thinking that it sounds boring. It’s just for kids. And it will take too much time. It’s none of those things.

Bible Memory is fun. It’s for all ages. And it can be done in as little as 5 minutes a day.

I started memorizing scripture again at the age of 56. I also do these with my young grandchildren now. They love it. They’re little boys, so I made it extra fun for them, and I decoupage each verse on a rock for them and put it in a treasure box….because it really is treasure.

And the great thing about this is it is something you can even do with your grandchildren that live far away. You can get all your grandchildren involved no matter where they live. You can even make it more fun by including the far away grands in a zoom while your local grands are with you. Make it a family affair!

As grandparents, we want to make sure we leave behind the most important things.

Why is memorizing Bible verses so important?

When I started memorizing scripture again in January 2020, I thought it would be fun to do again. I had such great memories of how it felt when I did this with my sons when we homeschooled. I don’t remember really thinking past that. I just remember being drawn back to this for the better part of 2019. So in January 2020, I broke out our old system with the index box and cards to see how we did it. It felt like home. I bought a beautiful new index box and started over with a few tweaks here and there.

I had no idea that my husband would die the next month. Or that the month after that we’d be starting a year long quarantine. Or the month after that my brother would die. I had no idea. But He did. God knew I’d be facing the worst year of my life.

I had no idea how much this simple daily act would mean to my life after doing it for a year. I thought I was just memorizing Bible verses. It was so much more than that. Big things in my life began to change, and it wasn’t me that was doing it. And these were things I had struggled with for many years. What was happening in my life left me puzzled. Remember, I though I was just memorizing verses. Something had shifted. I was no longer doing things in my own power. I’m trying to figure out what is happening. The only thing I was doing differently was memorizing scripture. This led me to see what God’s word says about scriptures. This is when things started to make sense. There is life-changing power in God’s word. His word is alive and active and does not come back void.

We NEED His word in our life every single day. We need to hide it in our hearts. We need to let it abide in us. His words are life to us and healing to our flesh. They give us faith. And so much more…

Why Is It So Important to Memorize Scripture?

Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:111
Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. John 15:7)
My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Proverbs 4:20-22
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” Matthew 4:4 (This is Jesus talking to the devil who came to tempt Him. He’s using scripture to defeat him.)
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Deuteronomy 8:3 (This is the scripture Jesus was referring to in Matthew.)
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Joshua 1:8
¹⁸Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
¹⁹And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
²⁰And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:
²¹That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth. Deuteronomy 11:18-21
⁶And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
⁷And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

⁹And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Acts of Kindness: Let All That You Do Be Done in Love

As I was picking up the yogurt container on my nightstand that I had just knocked over, I noticed the small plaque. It read: God is greater than any problem I have. I cannot look at that plaque without remembering who gave it to me. I’m sure he has no idea that I still think of him or how much he touched my heart, probably more than anything else I’ve ever received.

I was about 13 years old working in the concession stands at church camp. It was a week of church services for all ages at a campground. I worked the window at the far end, and one of my regulars that week was probably about my age who came with his parents as he needed them to care for him and help him. I loved seeing their smiling faces and chatting with them. As the end of the week drew near and the last time I saw the three of them, the son, with a big smile on his face, gave me this plaque. I thought it was the most touching and sweetest thing ever. He obviously had his own struggles, and here he was thinking of something he could do for me. He has no idea all the hard days that I had ahead of me and how that simple, little plaque has been with me on every single one of them as a reminder that God is greater. Forty-four years later, I still remember him and his family and think of them. And I’m still so touched. He showed me the most pure act of kindness.

Never underestimate the power of an act of kindness. He may have even thought that someone like him who needed someone to take care him would have nothing to offer someone else or that would matter to someone else. Oh, if he only knew. He was the perfect person to show me the love of Christ.

We might even think that because we only see someone briefly that what we say and do won’t matter 44 years from now. Please let this story act as a reminder that it can.
